When famed Mexican composer Carlos Chávez wrote the Festival’s first-ever commission in 1969, he titled itDiscovery. Nothing could have been more apt for Cabrillo. As the Festival turns 50 this season that sense of discovery is stronger than ever. Maestra Marin Alsop has programmed an amazing 2012 line-up that includes an added weekend for three performances of the Festival’s largest commission to date. Hidden World of Girls: Stories for Orchestra is a groundbreaking multimedia work that merges storytelling with digital media and live music. It weaves together the voices of women and girls who courageously discover meaningful places for themselves in a challenging world. And that’s just the beginning of a season that features six world premieres, three west coast premieres, and fourteen composers-in-residence. We will salute past epochs with anniversary tributes to both Lou Harrison and Carlos Chávez, while presenting works by contemporary composers both familiar and new to Festival audiences. All this, plus a stunning roster of guest artists at the top of their game, from throughout the world. Cabrillo reaches the half-century mark this season ready to explore new orchestral voices for the next half-century and beyond.
